Obituary ....

GORDONVILLE FARMER KILLED BY LIGHTNING WHILE CUTTING WHEAT

JOHN T HANSCHEN LOSES LIFE, DENNIS YOUNG, COMPANION, AND TEAM SHOCKED.

Jackson, June 17 - One of the severest electrical storms ever experienced in this county passed over the central part of it yesterday afternoon. During the storm John Hanschen, well-known Cape township farmer was struck by the electric bolt and was killed outright. His hired man Dennis Young, who was standing near, was knocked down and was unconscious for a short while, but has now fully recovered from the shock. Also the three horses hitched to the binder on which Mr. Hanschen was working were felled, but all came to and recovered.

Mr. Hanschen, who had been driving the binder, found that the machine needed a little repairing and stopped to make the necessary adjustment. He was hammering on a certain brace on the binder when the lightning struck. Young says that when he himself recovered consciousness he saw Hanschen on his feet but staggering around and then he saw him pitch forward and fall on his face.

Squire Gus Schulz of Cape Girardeau was summoned to hold an inquest if deemed necessary, but the justice confined himself to a view of the body after hearing Young's testimony. The funeral will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Gordonville Lutheran church, beginning at 1 o'clock at the farm home.

John Hanschen was born in Hubble township on March 5, 1882, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hanschen, both of whom survive, together with two brothers, Martin and George Hanschen, and one sister, Mrs. Henry Voges of Illmo. About nine years ago Mr. Hanschen was married to Anna Kester, who now survives. Two children, one son, Otto, and one daughter, Ida, also are left to mourn his death.

This is the second violent death in that community in the last ten days, William Renne, Jr., having been drowned in a pond on June 8.
