Obituary ....

MAN KILLED AS HE RUNS INTO SIDE OF AUTO

Clarence Niemann, 42, a Deaf Mute, Fatally Injured on Highway.

Clarence Niemann, 42 years old, a deaf mute, was instantly killed Sunday afternoon when he ran into the side of a motor car as he was crossing Highway 25 at his home, four miles south of Jackson. He apparently did not see the vehicle as he ran directly into it.

The car was driven by H. H. Robinson, who resides on Route 4 near Morley. The impact was so violent that the glass in the front right hand door of the car was broken, the lower part of the door bent inward and the handle of the door broken off.

Mr. Robinson said that he saw Niemann start crossing the road when the car was a short distance away. He applied the brakes on the car, a 1941 Chevrolet, but Niemann looked neither right nor left, and when the collision occurred the car was not going more than 20 miles per hour. It was said by members of the family that Niemann was going across the road to the barn to get some eggs, but they did not see the accident.

Corner Investigates

Coroner Burton Short was called and ordered the body removed. Dr. W. W. Ford was called earlier. The McCombs Undertaking Co. took charge of the body which was taken to the funeral home. The coroner is continuing his investigation and has not decided whether to hold an inquest. Mr. Robinson came back to Jackson and placed himself at the disposition of the officers, saying that he could not avoid the collision. He was on his way home from Fredericktown and was alone in the car.

At the Undertaking establishment it was found that Niemann had sustained a broken neck, a broken leg, a broken arm, a deep cut on the left side of the head and cuts and bruises on other parts of the body.

Clarence Niemann was born on the farm where he spent his entire life. He was never married, and is survived by his mother, Mrs. Bertha Niemann with whom he made his home, two brothers, William Niemann at home and Henry Niemann in the same community, and one sister, Lillian Niemann, also at home. Another brother, Walter was fatally injured two years ago when he was struck by a truck near the scene of this accident.
